Psychology POV: Movie – Udta Punjab
- By Ms. Siddhi Upadhyay
As the title itself suggests, “udta” means to fly / fly; thus Udta Punjab, the movie presents a dark picture of many people being defeated by drug abuse in the Punjab. The current analysis follows Balli's life. The reason for choosing Balli's character is straightforward and obvious. Balli is a young heroin addict his character is important because he represents the Punjab youth in the movie and enlightens us about the horrible drug threat in their lives. However, the problem of Punjab drugs is not limited to the numbers of unemployed people. It is almost uncontrollable madness in all categories — be it age or gender or category of that issue. Therefore, approaching and analyzing Balli's character is almost impossible and often in vain if a larger framework that includes all other characters, the context of the age and the media, political and commercial encounters with the police. Balli is a young man, living with his brother, mother and grandmother and grandfather in the Punjab area. His father recently died and is being cared for by her brother, Sartaj, a young police officer. His mother and grandmother are still worried about his life. He usually sleep late and often miss classes. Balli is a drug addict and has a long history of drug use. There seems to be a lot of neglect in his family. Although he lives in the same house as other members of his family, they have never been able to go in to look for his son / brother who is at the very risk of his or his life. Negative relationships or family neglect are important factors in maintaining drug abuse. Bali’s has been greatly influenced by one thing - the splendor and life of rock star-Tommy Singh. Balli worships Tommy with his poster attached to his front door. Tommy is crazy among his new fans. Tommy himself, however, is committed to using cocaine uncontrollably and is famous for his running songs that glorify drugs and violence. Young people are often negatively affected by such music and popular celebrities who imitate them as they attract them. The same goes for Balli and other young people in Punjab. They were addicted to drugs while listening to Tommy's songs. Even Balli's cell phone has subscribed to Tommy's song. So big is Tommy's influence on his life. So it seems that a well-organized motivational gizmo works after the drug crisis in Punjab. Punjabi songs have been acclaimed, praised and danced around drugs for years. Drug songs are as popular as love songs. Punjabi music featuring songs by singers like Tommy Singh is a major drug propaganda. The music industry has undermined the very popular culture in Punjab to such an extent that the provincial government once had to establish a commission to monitor the content of these songs. Drugs have been a problem in Punjab for many years. Punjab was once a hotbed of drug trafficking but has now become a major drug centre. Drugs are a thriving, lucrative business in the Punjab.
Illegal drug or drug abuse is rampant. Drugs are sold over the counter as hot cakes. Balli simply walks for a day at a medical store and asks for a local “chaand” drug. When the pharmacist offers one, Balli immediately asks for another. It is not surprising to see a pharmacist handing out two bottles without hesitation as he is aware of the abuse that is taking place as he does not ask for a prescription from Balli. One day, when Balli goes to his drugstore, where his friends are also for the same purpose, he overreacts to Chaand. Today, we live in a highly competitive world, and it is difficult to grow in such a world. There is always peer pressure in young people that is less or less apparent. Many young people expect to experience stress as a result of drug abuse, smoking, and the abuse of alcohol. They find it difficult to be a non-drinker or non-smoker. Feeling isolated and they became addicted to drugs. Balli is so addicted that it was his second injection in less than an hour. Often in drug addicts, there is a strong desire to take drugs, which leads to their being caught in the compulsive behavior of drugs. Addiction therefore develops dependence on something . A person may have enough money to volunteer on a regular basis. But once a person is addicted, drug use is no longer a matter of choice. Also often attached is intolerance and subsequent diet and sometimes intolerance that leads people to try new drugs and participate in multiple drug addictions. As soon as he injects the drug, he faints. Bali arrives at Dr.PreetSahni Clinic who is a doctor and has a rehabilitation center. Balli's brother was shocked to see his condition in the hospital. The doctor finds his nails and eyes turned blue and gives a double dose of medication. It is sad to see Balli in this situation. Clearly, he cannot tolerate the physical effects of drugs. Balli, as prescribed by a doctor, was taking a combination of pheniramine and buprenorphine. What we see, however, is that his brother denies it; cannot accept the fact that Balli was involved in drug dealing. You can see that Balli's living expenses are only 50 rupees, the cost of Chaand made at the counter. Balli's brother is aware of the drug trafficking that his adults allowed on a large scale. But when it comes to his family, his brother, he realizes the difficult situation. Routes to supply drug dealers are rarely linked to police. There is nothing that prevents drugs from them. Dr. Preet shows in a mirror at Sartaj about the supply of drugs through police connections and the problem in Punjab. The background for police involvement in the scandal goes as follows: drug parcels from neighboring countries are often tossed into Punjab stadiums. The migrants working in the fields picked up the packets and distributed them inside the field through various distributors. However, along the way local police and agencies assist traffickers with easy transportation through bribery. Balli's brother was aware of this type of smuggling that happens every day and night on the streets of Punjab but he never thought that such an encounter would ruin his brother's life. Balli therefore became the last person in the drug distribution system. The effect of Balli's drug addiction was seen later when he stabbed Dr. Preet in a correctional facility while trying to escape from the clinic. Balli's thinking and comprehension are affected. His decision-making process has been disrupted. Most people do not realize the damage caused by drug addiction because the effects are not immediately apparent. A person may feel invincible and unaware that drugs can affect and destroy his life — both physically and socially. Finally, we see his writhing in tears. Two explanations are as follows: He may be overwhelmed with remorse. Also, he may feel rejected by most of his peers. He feels left out. But we do know that he had no control over his actions and needed medical attention instead of stigma.
CONCLUSION
Thus the analysis of Balli's character through the way of life history brings awareness of the widespread drug problem in Punjab. Balli is like any other teenager out there. However, due to a number of factors, such as age, peers, popular media-related products such as celebrities and their songs, drug trafficking and easy availability and other factors such as police involvement in drug trafficking in downtown areas. In the city, youths like Balli quickly became victims of the drug epidemic and addiction. Therefore, the movie Udta Punjab gives a good light and conveys the audience about the gravitational pull and the need to deal with this threatening digging beast. It is a clever use of media pedagogy.
